Whole Food First: My Honest Take on Supplements and Wellness
As a first time mom and the founder of Ayo Organics, I often get asked the same question:
“Do we really need supplements?” and ''do I really have to spend so much on these products?"
Here’s the truth no one sells you—supplements are support, not substitutes. Taking these products is not meant to replace good nutrition and here's why you wouldn't want that for you and your family:
I like to think of supplementing as a way of communicating with technology. It’s efficient, powerful, and often necessary—especially in our fast-paced lives. But just like sending a voice message or typing out a text, it can never replace the richness of a face-to-face conversation. Sharing healthy and hearty meals some might even say is a spiritual experience. Why do you think we are so willing and happy to find new places to dine or keep going back to family favorite spots or dishes made by mom and grandma?!
That’s what whole food is.
It’s the eye contact. The in-person hug. The long talk over dinner. It nourishes more deeply, more fully, and more intuitively.
So when someone asks if supplements are “essential,” I say this:
Not if your body’s already getting what it needs from food, rest, and rhythm.
But let’s be honest—most of us aren’t. Most of us also need help to get to that point and that's the business of supplements, to support.
We’re skipping meals, eating on the go, battling stress, and parenting in survival mode. And in that reality, supplements step in like a helpful hand: filling the gaps, boosting immunity, and helping us get through seasons that feel like too much.
Here’s How I Use Supplements:
-
For backup during busy weeks when I know I’m not eating enough greens or sleeping well. I like to meal prep some vegetable soups though so I can avoid this scenario and have easy access and easily digestible nutrition.
-
To support my daughter when she’s not getting all the nutrients she needs from food alone. Sometimes I give her multivitamins, sometimes I don't! I base it on when she needs and extra boost of energy or when she's not feeling well.
-
To reset my body after a long stretch of stress, travel, or sickness. It's particularly helpful that I'm in my current season of weakness now that I am 5 months postpartum after an emergency c-section.
But I always start with food.
Real food. Whole food.
Because that’s what the body recognizes first. And everything else? It should work with your body, not override it.
What You Can Do Today:
-
Prioritize real, nutrient-dense meals (if it's hard to do daily even just 1-2 a week makes a difference). The work yourself up from there in your own pace so it's sustainable.
-
Notice how your body feels when you eat vs. when you supplement. Track, track, track your progress and how you feel!
-
Choose high-quality, gentle supplements that support your family’s real-life needs. I have an impartiality to liquid format as they have up to 97% absorption vs. capsules and tablets.
At Ayo Organics, I only create products I use with my own family. If I wouldn’t give it to my daughter or nephew and nieces, I wouldn’t sell it to you.
